Alle für Alle

Grundschule an der Waldmeisterstrasse, München

In the center of the newly constructed school, a circular free-standing stairway reaches from the basement to the second floor, connecting the four stories of the building. The six- to-eleven-year-old school children walk up and down this stairway, which is situated a few meters in front of a huge wall. More than 300 ceramic faces are pasted on the wall. Every day they see the children running up and down between classes. And every day the school children see the tiles.
It is like the tile faces say to the children: "You are not alone, we are not alone, we smile and cry and are amazed and beautiful and ugly and sometimes in a bad mood or hostile and sometimes incredibly joyful and friendly. Exactly like you. In any case, we are here for you and you for us. Alle für alle ['All for all']. How nice to be with you for four years."
Groups of connected tiles are mounted on the wall, forming clouds – in between are empty spaces where the wall is visible – starting in the basement and ending on the second floor in a big crowd.
The newly constructed school will be completed in summer 2022. When a class graduates, the faces will still be there, looking forward to the new incoming children, cheering in unison: "Alle für alle ['All for all']. How nice to be with you for four years."
